In search of mammoths

Where to go for the weekend? One of the most exotic answers to this question: “Go to seek for mammoths”.

To put it more precisely – not mammoths, but their bones. Also you can seek for the bones of other ancient animals such as bison and ancient horses, that were living on the territory of present-day Chelyabinsk region 15-20 thousand years ago.

Speleologist and paleontologist Vladimir Ivanovich Yurin names Continue reading ‘In search of mammoths’

You ride from Chelyabinsk to Yuzhnouralsk approximately 90 km on the Troitskii road  in strictly south direction.

We visited Canada by the invitation of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development – it is business visit by exchange of experience.

In detail about business part of the travel you can read HERE, and this reportage is unofficial part of the visit.

Canada like Russia, only there is clean and normal”, – my daughter said at the second day in Canada.

Canada is homely and comfortable like house slippers. There is comfortable and quiet, just “on a foot”, in Canada. Continue reading ‘Toronto’

Innovative technologies and clean environment

When a few months ago I showed to local official one Dutch project of underground containers for garbage, he replied firmly: “This will never happen in Chelyabinsk!’’ But on September 7th governor of Chelyabinsk region Mikhail Yurevich said that “It is time for new solutions in Chelyabinsk region.” Having said, that there is a need for development of little towns and villages, governor promised: ” Chelyabinsk region will become a place with attractive living conditions for people.”
And attractive living conditions mean first of all clean and safe environment. There’s a chance that the development will affect not only the urban and rural roads, but the appearance of Chelyabinsk might also change: there will be modern trash containers, stylish litter-bins, street sculptures and fine fences manufactured by using laser technologies (e.g. Chelyabinsk company Laser Technologies ). trash-container-casley-chelyabinsk-region Trash container in the city of Casley, Chelyabinsk region. The container is locked up, so people do not litter :) )

Trip through the smoke, Russia

I just yesterday returned from a trip route Chelyabinsk – Naberezhnye Chelny – Kazan – Nizhny Novgorod – Cheboksary -Elabuga. Almost 3000 km on the car. Smoke began just behind Naberezhnye Chelny. At first it was very difficult to breathe, but the next day we got  accustomed to this smoke and almost did not notice it. On the way back the smoke has got to Ufa. Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan were also in the smoke, the sun was not visible. Day temperature was up to 42 degrees, night temperature were dropping to 30. In Nizhny Novgorod, there was no rain from June 25, in Cheboksary, the church arranged the procession to ask for rain. Fields are of yellow colour, wheat is nearly all burnt out (not from the fire, but from the sun), the harvest will not be. Continue reading ‘Trip through the smoke, Russia’

Forest-Park, Haan, Germany

There are places where the boundary between the park and the city is missing: either park in the city, or town in the park?
How, for example, in the small town of Haan, which is twenty kilometers from Dusseldorf. Houses delicately intrude into the landscape, trying not to disturb the forest variety. Only bright spots of flowers and playgrounds forced to call the forest park.

Myths and Reality

1. “No money.”
As for the gross regional income per capita and many other economic indicators Chelyabinsk takes the lead over Ufa, Cheboksary, Khanty-Mansiysk and many other Russian cities in which the problem of waste collection and waste disposal is solved more successfully than in Chelyabinsk.

2. “Our people are not accustomed to sort trash”.
Of course, not accustomed. Nobody teaches them: there is no social advertising, and mass media remains shamefully silent about this subject, and the system of penalties for unsorted garbage collection is not provided.
In Magnitogorsk, for example, is begun an experiment on separate waste collection.

3. “Our people will never keep order and divide garbage onto different containers! They even can not open the cover of a container that is why containers without lids are set!”

Russian sauna (‘banya’), Chelyabinsk

Chelyabinsk is surrounded by several lakes. One of them – Smolino lake – is a favorite vacation spot of townpeople at any time of year.

In the middle of the lake  there is a floating sauna which is used from early spring to late autumn. You can go out of the sauna and immediately start swimming in the lake.

In winter time sauna is pulled closer to the beach and next to it the big ice-holes are cut. In the Russian sauna (‘banya’) it is normal first to use birch twigs and then jump into the cold water. When the pictures were took, the temperature was -28C, so instead of jumping into the ice-hole we prefered to take cold bucket shower. Wonderful!
