Emmerich at the Rhine

Emmerich at the Rhine is a small German city situated in the neighbourhood of another German city called Kleve. The city looks rather modern because it was almost completely destroyed at the end of World War II and then rebuilt. Many people from the nearest villages come to Emmerich to do shopping. Thanks to the beautiful embankment and location on the river bank this city became the local tourist center. In summer time you can see the tourist sheeps tied at a wharf. Rhine bridge connecting Emmerich with Kleve is the longest suspension bridge in Germany. On the parking place there is an electric car charging point stressing the modern look of the city.

In search of mammoths

Where to go for the weekend? One of the most exotic answers to this question: “Go to seek for mammoths”.

To put it more precisely – not mammoths, but their bones. Also you can seek for the bones of other ancient animals such as bison and ancient horses, that were living on the territory of present-day Chelyabinsk region 15-20 thousand years ago.

Speleologist and paleontologist Vladimir Ivanovich Yurin names Continue reading ‘In search of mammoths’

Monschau

Monschau is a old little town in the Eifel national park in Germany. It is a touristic town with plenty of souvenir shops, cozy cafes and restaurants. Many houses are built in traditional German style and famous for their unique architecture called “timber framing”. The structure of houses is formed by the jointed together timbers that you can see on the front part of the houses.  It makes houses unusual and unique, that is why many tourists from different countries come here.

The town is also well known for the castle of Monschau which was built  in the 13th century. Nowadays the main building of this castle is used as a youth hotel. The inner yard of the castle is used in summer time for opera concerts. In the center of Monschau you will find a so called “red house” which was built in the baroque style in 1756.  Through the city flows the Rur river and some buildings stand literally in the water.

As a whole Monschau can be described as a romantic fabulous place to go to.

Flood in Lockyer valley, Australia

The four photos show how quickly the floods happened on a farm at Helidon on Monday 10.01.2011.
There has never been water on this cultivation before. Lockyer Creek runs behind the cultivation. The times on the photos say it all.
The farm is upstream from Grantham which got the full force of this creek and another creek (Flagstone Creek) which joins into it just before Grantham.

Budapest, Arló

This summer holiday we spent one week in the holiday house Bertha  situated in the Matra mountains 150 km to the north-east of Budapest, opposite the lake Tó which is near Arló.  Arló is a village of about 4300 inhabitants, it dates from the 11th century. It is a beautiful area which is ideal for people who like quiet, not crowded places. The surroundings are really picturesque, especially towards village Belapatfalva where you can find very old abbey.
Not far from Arló is the Ózd town with a large outdoor and an indoor swimming pool, supermarkets, restaurants and pizzeria’s. It is certainly surprising how clean and neat everywhere, you will not see litter or beer cans on the streets, but many trees and flowers. On our way back we visited Budapest, which is beautiful located on the bank of the river Donau and is surrounded by mountains.
